Material You for everyone: Android 12's most interesting design change is coming to Samsung, Xiaomi and more

Android 12 is starting to take its first steps. There are still few smartphones that have the new version of the operating system and even fewer that have been launched with it, but it is expected that little by little, penetration will increase.

One of the main novelties of Android 12 is Material You, the dynamic theme engine that, in a nutshell, is capable of adapting the colour palette of the interface and apps based on the wallpaper. We have already had the opportunity to see this system in the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro and now Google has confirmed that, soon, we will see it in mobile phones of other brands.

You stuff for everyone

As Google explained, the dynamic colour offered by Material You will be soon available on more Android 12 phones globally, including devices from Samsung, OnePlus, OPPO, Vivo, realme, Xiaomi, Tecno and more.

Material You is a defining feature of Android, according to Google, and for this reason, it encourages developers to adapt their apps to be compatible with this system. Similarly, smartphone makers are already working with Google to ensure that core design APIs work consistently across the Android ecosystem.

This is something interesting, without a doubt. Each of the brands mentioned above uses its customization layer (One UI, MIUI, ColorOS, etc.) and what Google implies is that these layers will be optimized to modify their colour palette based on the wallpaper.

Among the optimized apps are Gmail, Photos and Chrome, but now the ball is in the court of developers and manufacturers, who must optimize their apps and systems to be compatible. We will also have to wait for Android 12 to land on more mobiles, a process that, sticking to the history of Android versions, usually takes time.
